On Saturday night SMS Promotions brings in Yourikis Gamboa who is known for winning an Olympic gold medal in the flyweight division at the 2004 Olympics. There is also some controversy as he was stripped of the WBA and IBF Featherweight titles in the past. Being a four time national Cuban champion, he also defected and went to Germany and applied for an American Visa; his professional boxing debut was in April in 2007 in Hamburg where he defeated Alexan Manvelyan. Gamboa’s debut in the States was even more reckoning as he put pressure on his opponents and first fought in the hub of New Jersey.
After his second fight against Jorge Solis, which he won by technical knockout, he had already unified the IBF Featherweight Championship and took control in the following re-match. This brings us to his current record of 21 wins and no losses. This weekend he faces Michael Farenas from the Philippines, who’s a southpaw fighter with no less than 37 fights under his belt with 26 wins by knockout.
This Philippine may interrupt Gamboa’s heart stopping action and may knock him out and land that perfect blow, however Gamboa looks like he has gained some great strength in training. His current health and the sharp look about him may just give him that edge to win over the more experienced Farenas.
His promoter, famous rapper 50 cent, under the name of “SMS Promotions” (previously project TMT Promotions) broke off recently and has been focused on the boxing scene and his license in Nevada was an obvious success. Meetings took place between him and Bob Arum and Manny Pacquiao and the show for this weekend is set.
This interim WBA Super feather weight fight featuring Yourikis Gamboa vs. Michael Farenas will take place on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez main event in a non – title welterweight bout on P.P.V in the MGM Grand in Vegas Nevada on Saturday 8th December.
