Lightweight champion Edwin Valero survived a huge gash caused by an accidental elbow to the forehead in Rnd. 2 and went on to score a victory against Antonio De Marco. According to WBC rules, a point was deducted for the unintentional foul.
In the early rounds, De Marco boxed Valero and patiently worked behind the jab. However, he lacked the aggression that was needed to defeat a busy slugger the likes of Valero. Valero threw volumes of punches from every conceivable angle, seizing the opportunity to gain status among American boxing fans in the nationally televised bout.
Valero put on a boxing clinic against De Marco in rounds 8 and 9. De Marco retired on his stool following Rnd. 9. Valero’s victory set his record at 27-0 with 27 knockouts.
Via interpreter, Valero said “The entire world is seeing an ascending fighter now and the world will be happy with the way I fight and what I demonstrated tonight”.
