Javontae Starks Interview

8CountNews.com is here with light middleweight boxing prospect Javontae Starks who had his 3rd Pro fight. The Minneapolis native stands at six feet, and drips with potential. Throughout the Minnesota professional scene, his arrival has been as anticipated as any fighter to emerge from the land of lakes in this era. His amateur career was brilliantly decorated and offered opportunities, and exposures many fighters don't see even years into their professional lives. His most prestigious amateur title was in 2008 the "USA boxing future starts national title", he places the second place in the us golden gloves in 2009 and won the USA boxing as well as the golden gloves regional championships. He compete on team U.S.A in a dual meet with puerto rico and participated in camp with Demetrius Andrade, Gary Russell and the rest of the 2008 olympic team. Starks competed as an amateur boxer from 2001 until 2009. On November, 11th, 2009 his big day arrived, and he was ready to get into the ring and win his pro debut. He matched up against Dan Copp and got a 2nd round KO. Javontaes goal is to become the next light middleweight champion of the world. 8CountNews.com: Congratulations on your tko win over Alexis Gonzalez in the 1rst round. Let's talk about your last fight. What is your reaction to it and did your last fight go as you had expected?

Javontae Starks: It went as expected. I was told he was tough, but he's an mma guy. My reaction was more like "another win under the belt and time to get ready for the next one"

8CountNews.com: How old were you when you decided to get into the sport of boxing and what got you interested in boxing?

Javontae Starks: I was 12 when I first fought and believe it or not I was watching Rocky, and Apollo died so Rocky stepped up his game to beat the Russian, and that inspired me to get into the ring.


8CountNews.com: What does your training look like?

Javontae Starks: We do three different workouts a day. I wake up and do a running workout, and a swimming workout. Then in the afternoon I come in and do the internal body work which reduces the chance of bleeding when I'm in with a big body puncher. Alot of stretching before I do my late night workout, then I do my boxing workout with pads, and bag work.


8CountNews.com: What is your favorite part of training and why? (Sparing, shadow boxing, pad work, conditioning...)

Javontae Starks: Once you overcome waking up to workout, the rest is easy.


8CountNews.com: For those who have not seen you fight yet, can you describe your boxing style?

Javontae Starks: I'm real patient, real selective, real accurate. I pace my fight just like a Bernard Hopins would.


8CountNews.com: What would you say is your best punch?

Javontae Starks: Left hook to the body


8CountNews.com:Who are your inspirations in the sport of boxing and what is the motivation behind your career?

Javontae Starks: My daughter is the motivation behind my career. I don't fight for myself anymore. The joy of being able to give my daughter whatever she wants some day overtakes me. If I'm in a tough situation on the bag or running she gives my energy. I want to be a world champ but if all else fails I want to be able to leave the game with a clear head and a little money in the bank.


8CountNews.com: If you could write your own script, what would the next 10 years of your life look like?

Javontae Starks: Man, reigning champion, undefeated for ten years. Instead of 8 weight classes like Pacquiao give me nine or ten belts and I'll be done (laughs). Thats if I wrote it man.


8CountNews.com: As of right now, who are your favorite boxers?

Javontae Starks: I like the Peterson brothers, Lamont and Anthony. Gary Russell is nice. Rau'shee Warren the amateur. No real headliners jump out at me though. I am a big fan of Andre Dirrell though, I met him and he is a real cool dude.


8CountNews.com: What is your first boxing memory?

Javontae Starks: My first year in the Silver Gloves. I was in the finals, first national tournament ever and I listened to the 50 Cent song "Many Men" and a rush of fear went through me. It was more or less nerves, but everytime I hear the song that replays in my mind.


8CountNews.com: If you weren't a boxer, what would you be doing professionally?

Javontae Starks: Playing basketball. I was a big time basketball player in junior high, and high school, so I think I'd be playing basketball.


8CountNews.com: What do you do in your free time to relax or for fun?

Javontae Starks: When I'm not boxing I'm working. I'm cutting hair, Playing with my daughter changing diapers and living a life outside of boxing.


8CountNews.com: Do you have anything you would like to tell boxing fans?

Javontae Starks: Trust and believe I'll be a big name in boxing. Not just for me but for the state of Minnesota, I'm going to throw Minnesota on my back like some shoulder pads and carry us to the end zone.
